I feel conflicted writing a post about John Denver songs you might consider for your wedding: He is just so totally over the top sometimes. We were forced to learn “Wedding Song – There is Love” for a ceremony one summer… and I’m sorry, it’s just too much, and too many Jesus references. Our generation cannot deal with that kind of earnestness.
That said, my friend Annie got married that summer and wanted the song “Annie’s Song” for her first dance with her new husband Derek. The first time I listened to it again to learn it, I definitely shed a few tears! So there, in the song also known as “You Fill Up My Senses,” he nails it.
(I also have one more confession to make, and that is my mom was his neighbor in Aspen in the 70s and used to listen to his songs in the backyard of their apartment building. She told him she thought he should be famous!)
This is such a timeless and utterly gorgeous song, especially for a wedding where nature is center stage. I love his delivery of this song. The lyrics are so emotional, monumental even, and his voice still sounds kind of casual, as if this was something he would say to his wife everyday.
You fill up me senses like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean
You fill up my senses come fill me again.
Come let me love you, let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms
Let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you
Come let me love you, come love me again.
Perhaps one of his best known songs, I think this would make a great recessional song for a country wedding, or for a couple who misses the rural life.
In conclusion, I know this list is short, and there are many other amazing John Denver wedding music to choose from, but these are my favorite and feel the most timeless for modern weddings.
